I want to tell you a story about Joy. She’s a 62-year old grandmother who loves her family and loves her grandkids. And yet, she felt completely dissatisfied with her life. She had this nagging feeling that she was supposed to be doing something bigger with her life and it was “grating on her like a piece of sand inside the oyster shell.” Growing up, she’d had so many interests and talents that she’d put on hold for the sake of getting married and having a family. Then, through her adult life, she’d dabbled in various business projects, but mostly as an outlet for her personal creativity. Now, she had an idea to start a big business, a real business. But she doubted herself. She questioned whether or not she could really do it. Her family doubted her too. They thought it was just another one of her passing interests. And yet, when she first came to see me, it wasn’t to talk about becoming an entrepreneur, it was out of desperation: She came because she wanted to figure out a solution to her nagging dissatisfaction, which was only made worse because she felt guilty about feeling dissatisfied with her family life. As we spoke, however, and as I shared with her the meaning of her Birth Card, the Jack of Diamonds, she opened up and confided in me that what she really wanted to do was start a business that would truly help people. The problem was she didn’t have confidence in herself. She didn’t see herself as the kind of person who could start and run a...

Meet Karen. She’s 52 years old, in a relationship for the past 10 years, and the mother of three grown children. She runs a division in a large organization, and she wasn’t getting the results she felt she should be getting. The problem was she kept getting “push-back” from other departments that was blocking her from actually doing her job. She found it impossible to get “a seat at the table” so that she could get the “buy-in” and “engagement” she needed. She told me that she couldn’t get past the “gatekeepers.” Just last month, for example, she had a big meeting where she tried unsuccessfully to ask for a project for her team that she knew was right for her team. She was told that “someone else would handle it.” And when she asked if she could at least listen in on the calls, she was blocked from that too. In despair and frustration, feeling stymied at every turn, she reached out to me for a Soul Attunement consultation. She’s born to play the 9 of Diamonds. And I explained to her how she personally, based on her cards to play, could best operate and what her best practices should be. And in that one consultation, she had a massive breakthrough. She reached out to someone in a different department who had previously blocked her efforts, only this time she approached him completely differently, based on the strategy I taught her to play her cards right. And presto, as if by magic, she got a completely different result. He said “Yes,” and she got what she wanted. Buoyed by...

I want to tell you a story about Mitch. He’s 54 and the co-owner of a boutique creative agency. He came to me as a coaching client after he’d heard me give a talk at an event. He said he felt incomplete and unsatisfied with his life. He hadn’t achieved the success in his career that he felt he should have. He told me that he would inadvertently sabotage himself by saying the wrong things at the wrong times. And just as he was about to close a big deal, for example, he would shoot himself in the foot. He had had enough success to support his family well, put both his kids through private schools, and take his family on wonderful vacations. Still, however, he felt a real sense of lack. It had been a struggle. He had regrets. And he was often secretly depressed. But he didn’t know how to break these patterns, not for lack of trying. In fact, over a 20-year period he had been to see three different therapists, two life coaches, and even two spiritual gurus. But still, he felt incomplete. And still his business didn’t gain the traction he knew it could. Over the course of several months of deep coaching work, I helped him identify exactly what was missing. As an eight year old boy, he had felt different, unaccepted, and unseen. And he carried that inner pattern of insecurity with him even into the corporate boardroom. And despite all the therapeutic work he’d done, he had never actually uncovered the root of this recurring pattern. The difference, he said, was that with...

I want to tell you a story about Rena. When she first came to see me for coaching, she was 35 and feeling hopelessly depressed. She’s an Ivy League graduate and had a great job in the financial services industry. And yet, she felt like life was passing her by. All her friends were getting married and moving on. She felt left behind. She desperately wanted to find love but was, in her own words, “bitter and angry with men.” All the bad experiences, heartbreak, and disappointment she had had with men, she explained, would make any woman cynical and jaded. At the same time, she felt like she was getting too old for a man to like her. She felt like she wasn’t attractive anymore. Worse, she admitted she felt like there was something specifically wrong with her. “Love might be for others,” she said, “but not for her.” And yet, despite it all, she yearned to find her soulmate. Our work together progressed slowly. She challenged me at every turn. And at several points in the coaching program she was ready to quit. She proclaimed, “it’s not working! This isn’t working for me!” But to her credit, she returned to the work and, despite some initial resistance, was willing to look deeply within herself to see how she was creating reality in her own image. Her first big ah-ha moment came when she found out the full meaning of her cards to play. She realized she’s not playing a traditional game of love and that it’s OK for her to approach love differently than her...

Drugs Did Good Things For Me My Spiritual Awakenings from Ecstasy and Cocaine I started taking drugs in 1999, at age twenty-six, when I moved to New York City to work as a consultant on Wall Street. I had just graduated from the Weston Jesuit Seminary in Cambridge, MA, where I acquired a master’s degree in Roman Catholic Theology. Before that, as a Harvard undergrad, I was a student pastor in an Evangelical Christian organization, leading prayer groups and Bible studies on campus. My gateway drug was Ecstasy, then Marijuana, then Cocaine, then everything else. All told, I ended up trying every single recreational drug imaginable, sometimes all in one night, including GHB, Ketamine, Crystal Meth, and drugs you’ve probably never heard of unless you know what 2cB is or 2ci. I even smoked Crack and tried Heroin. Although to be fair, my Heroin usage was accidental. A friend of a friend gave me a pill in a club that I thought was Ecstasy. Once I took it, however, something different came over me. I still remember how each time I puffed on my cigarette; it sent waves of tingling pleasure through my whole body emanating directly from my chest. I had to go sit down it was so orgasmic. I lost contact with my friends. And I had their coat check tickets in my pocket. They went home in the bitter, cold morning without their winter coats. I only found out later it was Heroin I had taken. I attended Catholic school while growing up in Fort Lauderdale, FL. In retrospect, it was pure torture, the agony...
